Legal Term

Force Majeure

अप्रत्याशित घटना (Apratyashit Ghatna)
Plain English Definition

A clause that frees both parties from obligation when an extraordinary event beyond their control occurs — such as natural disasters, war, pandemics, or government orders. It prevents either party from being penalised for non-performance caused by events they couldn't prevent.

Real Indian Example

During COVID-19, many tenants couldn't pay rent because they lost their jobs. If your rental agreement has a force majeure clause, you could invoke it to negotiate a rent reduction or pause without breaking the contract.
