Legal Term

Indemnity

क्षतिपूर्ति (Kshatipoorti)
Plain English Definition

A promise by one party to compensate the other for any loss or damage. Under Section 124 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872, a contract of indemnity means one party promises to save the other from loss caused by the conduct of the promisor or any other person.

Real Indian Example

Your rental agreement says 'tenant shall indemnify landlord against all claims arising from the premises.' This means if someone gets hurt in your flat due to a leaking pipe you reported but wasn't fixed, you might still be held liable — which is unfair. Push for mutual indemnity instead.
