Governing Law

लागू कानून (Laagoo Kanoon)
Plain English Definition

The clause that specifies which country's or state's laws will apply to interpret and enforce the contract. For Indian contracts, this is usually 'the laws of India.' For international contracts, it matters more — a contract governed by US law may have very different outcomes than one governed by Indian law.

Real Indian Example

You sign up for a SaaS product based in the US. The terms say 'governed by the laws of California.' If you have a dispute, California law applies — not Indian consumer protection law. This could be disadvantageous for Indian users.
