Stamp Duty

मुद्रांक शुल्क (Mudrank Shulk)
Plain English Definition

A tax paid to the government on legal documents like property purchases, rental agreements, and power of attorney. Rates vary by state and document type. Unstamped or under-stamped documents may not be admissible as evidence in court.

Real Indian Example

In Tamil Nadu, stamp duty on rental agreements is 1% of the total rent for the lease period. For a ₹20,000/month rent for 11 months, that's ₹2,200 in stamp duty. You can buy stamp paper at the sub-registrar's office or use e-stamping.
