Affidavit

शपथ पत्र (Shapath Patra)
Plain English Definition

A written sworn statement of fact, signed before a notary public or judicial magistrate. The person making the affidavit swears that the contents are true. Making a false affidavit is a criminal offence under Sections 191 and 193 of the Indian Penal Code.

Real Indian Example

For a name change, you submit an affidavit stating 'I, Rajesh Kumar, have changed my name to Raj Kumar.' This sworn statement, notarized and published in a gazette, becomes legal proof of the name change.
