Undertaking

वचनबंध (Vachanbandh)
Plain English Definition

A formal pledge or promise to do (or not do) something. An undertaking given to a court is legally binding and violating it can lead to contempt of court. In contracts, it's a strong commitment that creates legal obligations.

Real Indian Example

A builder gives an undertaking to the buyer: 'I undertake to complete the flat and hand over possession by December 2026.' If they fail, the buyer can use this undertaking as evidence to claim compensation or file a complaint with RERA.
