Estoppel

विबन्ध (Vibandh)
Plain English Definition

A legal principle that prevents a person from going back on their word or denying something they previously stated or implied, if the other party relied on it. Defined in Section 115 of the Indian Evidence Act, 1872.

Real Indian Example

Your landlord verbally assures you that you can keep pets. You adopt a dog. Six months later, the landlord tries to evict you for having a pet. Estoppel prevents this — since you relied on their assurance and changed your position (adopted the dog), they can't go back on their word.
